Bill Gates predicts that AI race will be won by the creator of personal assistants, spells doom for Amazon

The AI race is intensifying and big corporations are pumping in billions of dollars to stay ahead. In the last few months, Google, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI have all made some major announcements related to the integration of artificial intelligence in their products and services. At the same time, e-commerce giant Amazon too made announcements related to AI to prove that it is also a strong contender in the AI race.

However, it seems now that AI may spell doom for the world’s leading e-commerce platform. Billionaire philanthropist, Bill Gates, recently said that the rise of AI will render the e-commerce giant obsolete. Gates said that only a developer who manages to create a personal agent that can perform certain tasks to save users’ time only will win the AI race.

“Whoever wins the personal agent, that’s the big thing, because you will never go to a search site again, you will never go to a productivity site, you’ll never go to Amazon again,” Gates was quoted as saying at a Goldman Sachs and SV Angel event.

Gates said that AI would radically change user behaviour, reducing people’s dependence on websites for searching, certain tools for productivity, and Amazon for shopping. The billionaire said that it will take some time until a powerful digital agent is ready to be made mainstream.

Interestingly, this is not the first time that Gates has talked about AI being used as a personal assistant. In March, he expressed apprehension over AI falling into the wrong hands. The founder of Microsoft had argued that the technology may have already been on a ‘runaway train’.

In March, Gates took to his blog to share his thoughts on how AI could reduce the world’s worst inequities. He went on to share his thoughts on how it would be a personal agent and boost healthcare and education. The philanthropist had also said that AI was a fundamental invention that was as revolutionary as the Internet, PC, and smartphones.
